Districts Explained

Floor and door:
In Budapest apartment buildings, the house number is often followed by the floor (em.) and door (a.) numbers (e.g., 3. em. 12. a.). The ground floor is marked as "fsz." (földszint). In older apartment buildings, the "mezzanine" (félemelet, between the ground and first floor) or "raised ground floor" (magasföldszint) are also common.

Inner zone (inner parts of Districts I, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX):
The historical center, with the highest density of buildings and services.

Middle zone (e.g., II, III, XI, XII, XIII, XIV):
Transitional areas, featuring mountainous and green zones in Buda, and dense residential and office functions in Pest.

Outer zone (XV-XXIII):
Typically suburban, more loosely built-up, or industrial-commercial areas.

City Center:
Officially only District V; in practice, locals typically mean the entire Pest area within the Grand Boulevard.

Inner Erzsébetváros (often "Party District"):
The part of District VII between the Small Boulevard and the Grand Boulevard. Due to the dense hospitality and nightlife functions, both locals and visitors treat it as a distinct zone.

Újlipótváros:
The southern part of District XIII, connected to the Grand Boulevard. A densely built residential neighborhood full of cafés and restaurants, typically with a strong local identity.

Újbuda / Bartók Béla Road area:
The inner, Danube-adjacent part of District XI, which has structurally become the cultural and hospitality center of Buda over the past decade.

Víziváros (Water Town):
The strip of Districts I and II along the Danube bank, below Castle Hill, featuring steep streets and historical buildings.
