Themed & Experience Cafés

Quick First Layer

Profile of themed locations

1. Animal cafés (Cat & Zoo Cafés)

Animal interaction
Exotic species
Age-specific entry
Cat cafés are the most common, but there is also a café showcasing exotic animals (reptiles, birds) in the city center.
Compromises & Venues ▾
The focus is on the animals; the quality of coffee and cakes is often secondary. On weekends, table reservations are typically mandatory.
Various rules are in place to ensure the animals' peace of mind. It may be worth checking the policies of the venue before visiting.

2. Classic Teahouses

Eastern tea ceremonies
Low-noise environments
Traditional floor seating
Quiet, secluded places specializing in Eastern (Chinese, Japanese, Indian) tea ceremonies and loose-leaf teas. In many places, consumption takes place sitting on the floor on cushions.
Compromises & Venues ▾
In some Eastern-style teahouses, shoes must be taken off at the entrance. Loud conversation is typically not accepted in these places.

Middle Eastern atmosphere
Age-restricted (18+)
Smoking policy compliance
Bars with a Middle Eastern atmosphere, often also offering Arabic or Turkish teas and food.
Compromises & Venues ▾
Due to strict smoking laws, genuine tobacco hookah smoking is often restricted to outdoor terraces. Entry is forbidden for those under 18.

(Prices and conditions vary depending on the location. The following reflect the guide prices for the 2026 season.)
Board game café
table fee (Game fee):
1,000 – 2,000 HUF
/ person / 3 hours
(on top of consumption)
Hookah (Shisha) rental:
5,000 – 9,000 HUF / occasion
(depending on type and filling)
Allergies: Visiting animal cafés should naturally be avoided in case of animal hair allergies. Eastern sweets served in teahouses often contain nuts and sesame.
The term "teahouse" is sometimes used in Budapest by cafés that sell simple filter tea. To find genuine teahouses offering loose-leaf teas, checking the photos in map reviews (teapots, Eastern decor) may be justified.
