Tickets & Passes

Quick First Layer

Ticket types and passes

(The categories cover the most common travel needs.)

1. Single Ticket (Vonaljegy)

Validity: Valid for a single, uninterrupted journey to the end of the line.
Who it may be suitable for: It can be suitable for those who use public transport a maximum of 1-2 times a day without transferring (e.g., only between accommodation and the city center).
When transferring on the surface (e.g., from bus to tram), a new ticket must be validated. (Exception: underground transfers between metro lines are free). A Block of 10 tickets (10 darabos gyűjtőjegy) is also available, providing ten single tickets at a discounted price.

2. Time-based tickets (30 and 90-minute ticket)

Validity: Provides unlimited transfers within 30 or 90 minutes.
Who it may be suitable for: It can be suitable for those taking a specific but more complex route (requiring multiple transfers).
They are exclusively available in digital format (BudapestGO app), not on paper. The last transfer must be started within the time limit, but the journey can be completed to the vehicle's final destination even after the time expires.

3. Daily travelcards (24h and 72h Travelcard)

Validity: Valid for exactly 24 or 72 hours from the starting time specified at the time of purchase.
Who it may be suitable for: It can be suitable for visitors arriving for a short stay. For more than 4-5 trips a day, it can be more cost-effective than using single tickets, and it saves the inconvenience of constant ticket validation.
A Group 24-hour travelcard is also available, allowing up to 5 people to travel together, which can be the most cost-effective solution for families or groups of friends.

4. Passes (15-day and monthly pass)

Validity: Unlimited travel for 15 days or one month.
Who it may be suitable for: It can be suitable for those staying in Budapest for more than a week.
Passes are personalized; the number of a photo ID (e.g., passport, ID card) must be provided at the time of purchase, and the ID must be presented together with the pass when traveling.

5. Budapest Card (Városkártya)

Validity: 24, 48, 72, 96, or 120-hour combined card.
Who it may be suitable for: It can be suitable for those who, in addition to unlimited public transport, also plan intensive museum visits and bathing.
Includes public transport, free entry to numerous museums (e.g., National Gallery, National Museum), and discounts to baths.
It is typically cost-effective only if the visitor actually utilizes the included museum entries; if used solely for travel, the standard 72-hour Travelcard can be a more cost-effective option.

Each pack includes the Budapest Card discounts, where applicable.
Airport bus (100E): The tickets, travelcards, and passes listed above are not valid on the direct airport express bus (100E). A special Airport shuttle bus single ticket must be purchased for that (details in the Airport to City section).
Digital validation: If using the BudapestGO application, upon boarding the vehicles (or at the metro entrance), the displayed QR code must be scanned with the phone's camera, and the animated image must be presented to the driver or inspector.
Paper-based tickets are printed on thermal paper. If kept in a warm place (e.g., in a wallet left in the sun), the ink can fade, and the ticket may become invalid.
