Opening Hours, Holidays & Closures (Autumn – Winter)

Quick First Layer

General Opening Patterns

Retail and Malls:
Generally open until early evening (20:00-21:00) every day of the week.

Groceries:
Large supermarkets close in the evening, but the city center has a high density of 24/7 convenience stores (with higher prices), which are exempt from holiday closures.

Hospitality:
Cafés typically close in the early evening, while restaurant kitchens take their last orders around 22:00-22:30 at the latest.

November 1, 2026 (Sunday)

December 24, 2026 (Thursday) - Shortened day, shutdown from 14:00

Food Constraints on Holidays:
Since supermarkets are closed, dining options are limited to pre-purchased ingredients, 24/7 convenience stores (narrower selection and higher prices), or the few open restaurants. Food delivery apps operate on holidays, but the selection may be narrower and waiting times longer.
The Trap of Free Museum Entry:
On October 23, most state museums (e.g., National Museum, House of Terror) are free for Hungarian and EEA (European Economic Area) citizens. This often results in exceptionally long queues and highly crowded exhibition spaces.
The holiday opening hours of independent cafés, smaller restaurants, and bars are entirely unpredictable. Many open despite the official retail closure, while others close for the entire long holiday weekend. This information is often only published on their social media pages 1-2 days before the holiday.
